Pick Your Color
Do I need 5" or 6" Gutter?
Each home was engineered by an architect and approved by an engineer both of whom have extensive education and training in the design and construction of building products.
If your home was originally fitted with 5-K style gutter, it's more likely that the architect specified 5-K style due to the fact that it was adequate for your roof's pitch, your home's style and the amount of rainfall expectations for the area you live.
No Two are Alike
No two buildings — or gutter systems — are exactly alike. Each guttering project has specific needs. And though 5- and 6-inch gutters are industry standards, factors ranging from architecture to geography should influence decisions about proper sizing.
Roof Line
“Start by looking at the roof line, “When you see the number of squares of shingles, it will tell you how many gallons of water can come off of the roof during a storm. The bigger the roof the more water it will generate.”
Consider the Slope
Since gutters exist to drain water away from buildings, then estimating the amount of water a gutter must potentially carry is a key to determining the correct size for the trough. “Slope is another important factor to consider.” His own rule of thumb is 6-inch = Commercial 5-inch = Residential.
Downspouts are Key
A third consideration is the downspouts. “You should worry more about your downspout sizes rather than your gutter size,” 3 x4 is the new industry standard. If your home has the older 2 x 3 down spouts, the most bang for your buck and water flow will be upgrading downspouts.
Location, Location, Location
In addition to considering the architecture of a structure, We advise installers to keep in mind the rainfall in their respective markets. Are you in an area that regularly gets downpours? Or in an area which might get one or two torrential rainstorms per a year?’
The Bigger the Better
Although you can go too big with your gutters, you can never go big enough with your downspouts. When it comes to downspouts, bigger is better! The larger your downspouts are, the better they can dispel water away from your home. Having downspouts that are too small increase the risk of clogging from organic debris that becomes lodged in them!
